Nick Moen is a creator of experiences and a collector of stories. He spreads his passion for rich human experience through ceramic design, glorifying the mundane moments of solitude and bringing people together to celebrate life over a meal. The North Carolina-based ceramic designer creates approachable pots for everyday use with glazes that contain stories of process – uniting the user and object in a spiritual space.

“I want my work to inspire opportunity in everyday ritual, mindful of the way that handmade vessels carry the history of their creation and the memories of conversation.” – Nick Moen

Nick Moen 's Micro-crystalline Glaze

Nick Moen’s Micro-crystalline Glaze Detail

Moen’s current line of ceramic ware is slip cast in small batches, allowing the work to maintain a consistent identity while achieving forms difficult to realize with traditional hand building methods. A counterbalance to the repetitive precision of the slip cast method is his use of micro-crystals in his glaze, random in their placement and density. The spontaneous crystal growth imbues the work with enough life to avoid the cold, soulless feel common in ceramic production-ware. The uniqueness of each piece allows the owner to form a lasting relationship with the object, creating preferences in use and noticing new details, even after months or years. This emotional connection is rare in the repetitive ceramic design industry, a trait that sets Moen’s work apart at major trade shows as well as in your kitchen cabinet.

Nick Moen earned a BFA from Alfred University, focusing on ceramic art, design, and materials science. He launched Nick Moen Studios in 2013, collaborating with chefs to make custom tableware for restaurants and events. In 2015, he released a line of pastel crystal-glazed porcelain wares, some of which are still available in his online shop.

Moen is in the early stages of a new design company endeavor, combining his passion for ceramics with his early success in the commercial market. To learn more, follow Nick Moen on Instagram.
